Meet C.I.M. S.p.A. Interporto di Novara

T4.4 “Intermodal digital eco-sysem” Leader Piloting KEYSTONE solutions

Meet C.I.M. S.p.A.-Interporto di Novara

C.I.M. S.p.A. Interporto di Novara promotes cooperation between companies operating in the field of logistics, offering spaces and infrastructures with high technological value and boasting a twenty-year presence in the territory of Novara. Thanks to its strategic position, CIM has always been one of the main logistical hubs for Northern Europe. Over the years Interporto has been equipped with a service company to support the operators with technological hardware and software last-generation solutions and to answer to all the demands of planning and development in the technological field.

CIM was founded in 1987 by Finpiemonte and the Municipality of Novara. The Interporto was thought of as an evolution of the intermodal terminal of Novara Boschetto where, since the mid-60s, thanks to the fortunate geographic position of Novara, developed intermodal traffic from and towards the European countries, in particular Belgium and Holland. The operating activity of the intermodal terminal started at 5,30 pm on 17 October 1995. Today the Interporto of Novara appears like a technological pole and multipurpose logistic center where to find not only spaces and transports but also ICT solutions and advanced services for the logistic ecosystem.

The Interporto represents today a reality of remarkable impact for the territory, thanks to its project activities always operative for the improvement of goods handling, with detailed care to sustainability and life quality.

The Interporto of Novara is the most important and advanced logistic infrastructure of the  Piedmont region. It covers an area of 600,000 m2. Its strategic location stands at the intersection of the Rhine-Alps corridor and the Lisbon-Kiev corridor and makes the company one of the main hubs of international traffic sorting. From the point of view of the receptivity of goods, CIM is located close to the Novara Est exit of the A4 highway, allowing heavy goods traffic to reach the exhaust without crossing the city centre. CIM Interporto can manage, during the year, a total number of 8.000 intermodal trains and inbound/outbound road traffic of 114.000 trucks (ca 300/day). Thanks to the capability of CIM to monitor road traffic, the company represents a focal point in collecting data that can be put at the disposal of public enforcement. In the KEYSTONE project, CIM will test the project applications on a railway terminal, using real data retrieved from real traffic across the Rhine-Alpine Ten-T corridor. As Interporto has an IT department focused on digital evolution activities, every single datum relating to the transport of different states can be used to become interoperable with third-party systems. CIM will create a dedicated application developed to serve the KEYSTONE app for drivers on one side and the KEYSTONE APIs to dialogue with the other economic logistic operators. The mission is to evaluate the efficiency of KEYSTONE solution in terms of time-saving in operational activities, usefulness of information for the public authorities and cost-saving for the transport operators.

Today CIM is involved in several European and national projects regarding data digitalisation and interoperability systems and is working with the most important and relevant logistic stakeholders across Europe. In the next three years, the company will invest over 16mln € in technology and infrastructure, to reach EU targets in terms of efficiency, data sharing and environmental care.

The first mission of Interporto di Novara is to encourage the modal shift in goods transport, moving off the trucks from the road and loading them on trains.
