KEYSTONE In Action

Newsletter Issue #2-2023

KEYSTONE In Action is the quarterly e-Newsletter of the EU-funded KEYSTONE project, which supports the digital transformation of compliance operations of both road enforcement authorities and logistics operators.

Why the digitisation of the logistics sector is overdue

KEYSTONE stakeholder survey calls on operators, freight terminals & enforcement authorities.

KEYSTONE has launched an ad-hoc survey, to collect the main needs and requirements from key stakeholders of the project. The survey maps the needs and barriers to the digital transformation process in the transport sector.

The survey results will help to understand better & create a digitalised and refined web app application that will reduce administrative burden and costs and will be used by both businesses and authorities across Europe.

The questionnaire is available in several European languages for the convenience of the participants and respecting European diversity at its core, including English, French, German, Greek, Italian, and Spanish. The duration of the questionnaire is approximately 10 minutes & consists of multiple-choice, easy-to-answer questions for logistics operators, freight terminals and enforcement authorities.

Unlocking Seamless Transport: KEYSTONE Shines at NAPCORE

KEYSTONE and National Access Points (NAPs) brainstormed together in Budapest (Hungary).

The recent NAPCORE event held in Budapest witnessed the dynamic presentation of the KEYSTONE project during a dedicated panel session. The session, centered around the theme "KEYSTONE Project and the Role of NAPs", allowed to assess collaborative potential with National Access Points (NAPs).

During the event, attention was drawn to the pivotal role of National Access Points (NAPs). KEYSTONE aims to collaborate with NAPs to gain insight into their needs, requirements, infrastructure, and accessibility. The project could serve as a leap forward in enriching already existing data standards, accommodating also the logistics and enforcement domains, incorporating standards for logistics into NAPs, testing API models, working on Paperless Transport, and assessing compatibility with existing standards.

KEYSTONE project at the STA Annual Conference & Innovation Awards

Several KEYSTONE consortium partners took part in the 8th edition of the landmark event.

The conference was organised under the motto “Introducing Taxonomy in Transportation Infrastructures”, and focused on the new EU taxonomy system & how the new classification system can steer transport industries towards a more sustainable future. Apart from the organiser STA, more KEYSTONE partners attended and participated in the conference, including Etelätär Innovation, the Spanish Road Association (AEC), the Technical University of Madrid and Cefriel.

eFTI, the digital leap forward in freight transport information

The project develops a secure digital platform that revolutionises the transport sector across the bloc.

What is eFTI (electronic Freight Transport Information)? It is the EU Regulation on electronic freight transport information that will enter into force in 2025. Among other things, it obliges competent authorities to accept information provided in electronic format.

The eFTI Regulation affects several EU regulations, such as those on tariffs, combined transport, road cabotage, waste shipment, dangerous goods, aviation safety and rail interoperability, among others. After several delays, it is expected to be implemented from December 2025.

What is the extent of digitalisation in freight forwarding today? What does digitalisation offer freight forwarders and their customers? And what does it mean for the future of the industry?

Digitalisation is shaking up the world of logistics, opening the doors to greater visibility, connectivity and agility. For the freight forwarding industry, the application of these new technologies has shown huge potential to simplify operations. However, it also presents a strategic challenge and a delicate balancing of priorities, investment, customer demand and capacity. UK: Government invests £200 million to drive innovation and get more zero-emission trucks on our roads

New funding will create new jobs and provide crucial infrastructure to help the haulage sector decarbonise.

More zero-emission trucks are set to drive on UK roads thanks to a £200 million boost to decarbonise freight vehicles, drive innovation and create new jobs as part of a week of government action to support the sector.

This funding comes as part of the government’s commitment to make the right long-term decisions for a brighter future. Decarbonising the freight sector is a key part of building a sustainable future for the industry and achieving our net zero commitments in a fair and pragmatic way that lowers costs, creates jobs and grows the economy.
