Meet Spanish Road Association (AEC)
The Spanish Road Association (Asociación Española de la Carretera – AEC) is a non-profit organization founded in 1949 whose main goals are the advocacy, promotion and development of a safer, more sustainable, higher quality, and more intelligent and technological road network and mobility. The Spanish Road Association was in addition officially declared of “Public utility” by the Spanish Government in 1998.
AEC has more than 200 members from both the public and private sectors, such as central, regional, and local administrations, Associations, Universities, Research Centers, Technology companies, Construction companies, Engineering and consulting companies, manufacturers of equipment, insurance companies, etc. Thus, the position is very interesting for the collection of perspectives and points of view from different stakeholders in the mobility field.
Since 1950, the Association has been a member of the International Road Federation (IRF). It is one of the founding members of the European Road Federation (ERF) and of the Instituto Vial Ibero-Americano (IVIA) (Latin-American Institute).
AEC is a key partner for the organisation of the Ibero-American Road Safety Congresses (CISEV), known as the main road safety forum in the Region of Latin America and the Caribbean. The events were first organized in 2008 in Costa Rica and, in following editions, in Argentina (2010), Colombia (2012), México (2014), Chile (2016), Perú (2018) and Madrid (2020).
AEC usually cooperates with Governments and International Organisations, such as the European Commission, the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC), the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the Smart Transportation Alliance (STA), Inter-American Development Bank, Asian Development Bank, European Investment Bank, CAF – Development Bank of Latin America or the World Bank.
AEC has been awarded several times in recognition of its work and efforts, mainly in the field of road safety:
In 2005 AEC received the most important international award from the International Road Federation (IRF), the “Global Road Achievement Award” in its category “Advocacy and Lobbying”. The prestige and the value of the activities of the Spanish Road Association were then recognized all over the world.
In 2012, the AEC received in Washington DC, in cooperation with the Inter-American Development Bank, the “Global Road Achievement Award (GRAA) 2012” in its category “Road Safety”. This prize granted by the International Road Federation (IRF) is considered one of the most prestigious road awards in the world. The successful project "Road Safety Strategy in Latin America and the Caribbean (Diagnosis Guide and Pilot Projects)" is a Road Safety Strategic Plan specific and unpublished before this date for this region of the American continent.
In 2013, the AEC was awarded the Línea Directa Aseguradora "Honorary Award to Road Safety".
Relevant Background & Expertise
From its birth, almost 75 years ago, the Spanish Road Association has been working in the field of road safety. It has adapted its activities to the social, economic, and environmental changes that happened at each moment. During the last 20 years, our actions have especially focused on sustainability, digitalisation, decarbonisation, safety, financing, etc.
AEC is well known for its research and consultancy works not only in Spain but also in the European Union and worldwide, particularly in the Region of Latin America and the Caribbean. The organisation is frequently asked by the political sphere to provide opinions on roads and road safety, not only by political parties but also by Central and Regional Spanish Parliaments.
AEC has participated in 3 European Research programs (supported by the European Commission) as a key partner With the KEYSTONE project, AEC, in the work package 4, is the leader of task 4.1 whose main goal is to carry out a comparison between existing enforcement procedures and operability of the pilots for enforcement authorities, particularly police corps. The AEC has also actively collaborated in the identification of Spanish stakeholders, and characterization of their needs. We also participate in the communication and dissemination actions of the project through our magazine “CARRETERAS”, conferences in which we participate, and our web and social networks.
